Dark of Night

Dark of Night

Benz – 1990 – Tet – 28” – 5” – Mid – Frag – Dorm – Ext – Black purple self with emerald green throat

This very dark-flowered cultivar is a fast increaser that establishes quickly. While the parentage is not registered, it almost certainly descends from the Super Purple/Grand Masterpiece family line. It is much like those cultivars and their descendants, but has prettier foliage, strong roots, fast increase and higher rust resistance than many of the Super Purple/Grand Masterpiece family, even though they all show some level of rust resistance themselves. However, as is seen with many of the Super Purple/Grand Masterpiece family line the sepals can be somewhat less than perfect on many flowers, though Dark of Night is not as bad in this regard as many of the plants in the Super Purple/Grand Masterpiece family.

I have never gotten Dark of Night to set pods, but the pollen is fertile and it has good breeding value for rust resistance. I have seen seedlings with its level of rust resistance and with better sepals. Purple rust resistant cultivars are rare so for anyone wanting to pursue purple rust resistant diploid lines, Dark of Night may be a useful breeding plant.
